Map form fields into cleaner Google Sheets columns
Google Sheets field mapping in Maxforms uses the order selected under Fields to Send. Add your own headers, then test one response before collecting live data.
How does Maxforms map fields to columns?
The first selected field goes to the first column, the second to the next column, and so on. Maxforms does not match answers by header text.
Rename a Google Sheets header freely, but change Fields to Send when you need a different column order. Moving headers alone can mislabel future rows.
Example: a lead form becomes a spreadsheet row

Prepare the header row
For the example above, add Name, Email, Topics, and Submission ID to row one of the destination tab.
The example values are illustrative. A multiple-choice answer such as Pricing and Demo is stored as one comma-separated cell.
Test a mapping before collecting responses

Open the integration
On the form’s Integrate tab, select the pencil icon on Google Sheets.

Check Sheet and Fields to Send
Confirm the selected tab and field order. Include Submission ID when you need to match a row to its response.

Save and send a new response
Select Submit, then submit the public form with a distinct test value in each field.

Compare every column
Check values against your header row. If you change the field order, use a new tab or realign existing rows before collecting more responses.
What happens to blank and multiple-choice answers?
Several selected choices are joined into one cell. A missing answer leaves its column empty rather than shifting later answers into that column.
Only new submissions are sent. Changing the mapping does not rewrite old rows or import responses collected before the connection existed.

01Can I map a field by typing a Google Sheets header name?
No. Maxforms uses the order selected under Fields to Send. Header text in the spreadsheet does not control where answers are written.
02Can I include a submission identifier?
Yes. Select Submission ID under Fields to Send so you can match each row to its response in Maxforms.
03Does changing the mapping update existing rows?
No. The updated field selection applies to new deliveries. Existing spreadsheet rows remain unchanged.
